“You progress through not what has been done, but reaching towards what has yet to be done”
Kahlil Gibran
I began my formal career in the automotive industry; where I gained a tremendous amount of invaluable experience. My first position was that of the Service Manager for Lear Corporation in charge of service parts at 16 Lear facilities. I had the fortunate advantage of taking this position just as Lear Seating had gone public and became Lear Corporation. The work environment was in fast growth mode and without enough man or woman power to keep up with the speed of transition. This situation laid a pathway for me to learn and excel at an extraordinary pace; and to take on much more responsibility very quickly.
As I earned promotions and my responsibilities grew, I grew my network. I met people in many fields of expertise, mostly engineers. Many of these engineers had protected designs of their own and had little or no funding to get them commercialized. I understood this very well because I also had drawn up some design concepts of my own. Funding always seemed to be an issue; if not funding it was timing. During all this heightening exposure to new innovations I had the distinct pleasure of meeting a retired CFO from KMS Laser Fusion. He introduced me to a retired engineer from McDonnell Douglas, and my first funding opportunity. They were holding a patent along with the law firm of Howard and Howard for a unique medical lift technology. In my off hours from work and kids I met with Angel investors; and then the fun began.
I left the automotive and started a consulting company and a jewelry distributorship all at once. On my own I needed to create multiple streams of income while I pursued fundraising and prioritizing motherhood. This shift in my career positioned me to receive a burst of new technologies to review. All of them needing a variety of inputs. All of them provided me with what I call “my informal advanced degree”. This knowledge I value highly. I will always be grateful for my work “on the ground”. I will try to share these experiences by outlining them as concisely as possible.
